Step 1 – Parry to Jab Counter
If you haven’t watched the video on the jab > parry > jab drill I would do that first as this drill is more complex and builds upon that one.
This version of this drill requires that both fighters be in the same lead. R for R or L for L. Aka both in orthodox or both in southpaw.
Parter A is the feeder and Parter B is doing the drill.
Partner A fires a lead jab and Partner B parries it and counter jabs.
Step 2 – Slip or Bob to Counter Hook
Once you have enough reps of step 1 we can add step 2.
Repeat step 1 again but now add the following. Partner A fires a rear overhand and Partner B steps forward at a 45° angle with their rear foot while slipping (or bobbing).
To do the bob you let your lead shoulder move towards your opposite knee. Make sure to bend both of your knees so you aren’t just leaning over at your waist.
You should be in a coiled position. So now just launch a counter punch out; I used my previously rear hand to do a powerful hook punch but you are welcome to see what options you have.
Step 3 – Straight Blast & Thai Clench for the Termination
For step 3 simply straight blast their head and wrap them up in our modified Thai clench.
Move them and blast away with kicks to the groin, knees to the body and head, elbows, etc.
When you move someone you can push them forward, pull them towards you, or spin them around. But just make sure to keep them moving between each strike you deliver so that they stay off balance and disoriented. You don’t want them getting their balance and returning the attacks.
Summary
Repeat this drill over and over with a partner, without a partner, looking into the mirror for feedback, using a heavy bag, or a partner with focus mitts on.
This is a very good entry using boxing to start the Rapid Assault Tactics funnel and quickly end the fight.
Remember tactics matter, mindset matters, and skills make you a whole lot better at using tactics and mindset.
Until next time,
Brian Copeland
