Is This a Legit Gun Disarm?
In the video we see some tips on how to do a gun disarm. But the question is, is this a legit gun disarm?
Let us take a critical look at some of the tips given and see if they meet the standards for what will work and what is total b.s.
Trap the Hammer on a Gun Disarm?
In the video we see the instructor trap the hammer of the pistol as the assistant pulls the trigger.
There are a couple of big problems with this approach.
1st many if not most handguns out there do not have exposed hammers. They have internal strikers. Do you really want to have to check what type of gun it is before you do your disarm to decide which type of disarm you need to do?

That adds in complexities that will slow down your thinking.
And frankly when you have a split second to take action any added time means you miss your opportunity or worse… You telegraph your movement which makes them flinch and you get shot.
The next problem with this is that the accuracy required to grab in the correct spot to stop the hammer (if there is one) is just too precise for when your heart is beating out of your chest.
Do you really want to rely on this when your life is on the line?
Finally as we will see in a moment this violates a core principle in gun disarms which is… your very first movement must clear the muzzle off of your body.

Where Should Your Hands Be Prior to a Gun Disarm
Another tip I will give on a proper gun disarm is that you want your body and hands to be in a ready position without looking ready.
That means we must disguise our intentions.
Slightly lean forward and put your hands not so much up but more like in a scared position. If you picture a pyramid with the gun being the top point of the pyramid your hands will be at the bottom corners.
You don’t want your hands up high as it is easier for your attacker to see them moving if you go for the disarm.
But you also don’t want them down by your sides as that is a long way to travel to reach the gun.
Imagine someone is scared. They are part of the way into a fetal position. Chin tucked, hands closer to their heart, palms facing out (to push danger away), leaning their weight slightly forward.

This looks natural and gets your hands closer to the gun.
Slide Out of Battery
I thought this couldn’t get worse but it does…
The instructor tells the assistant to pull the trigger (of an unloaded gun thankfully) and he quickly pulls the slide back. This will cause many pistols to be “out of battery.”

What that means is that the hammer or firing pin may not be able to contact the primer on the bullet. Which would mean the bullet would not fire out of the muzzle.
Great idea on paper but we still have some problems.
First off in this example the muzzle was still pointed at the instructor. If the primer was hit then… well, you know. BANG!
Second, this technique will absolutely not work with a revolver as it has no slide.
Third, some pistols can still fire even with the slide pulled back out of battery to some degree. The further you pull it back the less contact the striker has on the primer of the bullet. So you would have to make sure it is pulled back far enough to not contact the primer at all or you risk the bullet being shot.

Once again do you really want to trust your life with this?
Finally, the attacker’s natural instinct once you grab the gun will be to pull the gun backwards. This will put the slide back into battery.
Once again… BANG!
Conclusion
So was this a legit gun disarm in the video?
Heck no!
Try to imagine the actual stress of having a gun pointed in your face.
Is your family there?
What will happen to you and your loved ones if you fail?
What will happen if you do nothing?
Is it worth going for the disarm? Is this the right time?
All of these things will be flying through your head and more.
You want a disarm that will be simple, direct, and non-telegraphed. Like the tips here
