Why & How We Straight Blast in JKD & RAT

Real Fights are Chaos

When you see 2 (or more) guys going at it they swing their arms wildly, fists going everywhere. They are off balance and many times fall on their own.

Guys will stand toe-to-toe and just throw punches without any tactics at all. They are hoping to land a huge blow that knocks the other guy out.

This is “luck fighting.”

Who will get lucky first and land the first significant blow.

We are fighters, we train for this. We can and must do better!

Straight Blast to Defeat the Chaos

Wonder why pro boxers throw combinations? Because their opponent can usually block a single punch. Sometimes two. Rarely three. And almost never more than that.

Our human brains just aren’t fast enough to keep up with too many things coming in too fast at once.

While that might be a disadvantage to us we can also use it to our advantage.

Enter the straight blast!

As seen in the video the straight blast is a series of super rapid palm strikes (some people use fists) right down the center line of your opponent’s face.

It overwhelms them and they can’t keep up with the chaos.

While the straight blast can be used to knock someone out (and sometimes it does) it is often used to make your opponent go into a perpetual state of flinching so you can follow up with something else like a big blow, take down, or Thai clench.

Tips to a Great Straight Blast

Use your palm heals

Fists break way too easily. Especially if you hit their skull bones which is very likely as they will probably duck their head and cover.

Make a circular motion

Just like peddling a bicycle with your hands. You can make the circle longer towards them when hitting and you can make it more up and down when knocking their guard hands down when they are covering.

Keep your elbows close together

This helps your straight blast turn into a simultaneous flurry of parries that will parry any incoming straight punches and allow you to knock down their guarding hands if they are up.

Sprint forward

Don’t try to maintain your stance on a straight blast. Instead just sprint forward. Your steps will be smaller than a true sprint. Frankly don’t overthink it, just run forward as you straight blast.

The point is to run right through someone. Especially if you are trying to get out of being surrounded by multiple attackers.

The person you are blasting will be moving backwards away from you. Now they can’t run backwards faster than you can run forwards but they can backpedal faster than you can footwork forward from your stance.

Be aggressive!

Seriously be aggressive in both mind and action. One of the beauties of the straight blast is you can go full on Hulk smash mode while keeping your balance and having a plan rather than just mindlessly swinging away and hoping for the best.

I have had students use nothing but a straight blast to win fights against multiple attackers.

In UFC 17.5 Vitor Bellfort used a straight blast to defeat favored Wanderlei Silva with lightening speed. Wanderlei who was feared for his striking ability was completely taken off-guard by the aggression and rapid strikes of Bellfort’s straight blast.

Summary

The straight blast is the ultimate technique to overwhelm your opponent and set up a finishing move or quite frankly just finish the fight on its own.

Until next time,
