Today you will get 100 reps of your uppercut punch focusing on 5 different rounds.
Uppercut Tip 1) Shift Your Weight
Shift your weight to your opposite leg when throwing your uppercut.
So if you are throwing a lead uppercut shift your weight to your back leg and vice versa.
The weight shift should be minor 60/40 – 40/60.
Uppercut Tip 2) Focus on the Knee for Power
Drop your knee inwards towards your centerline. This will cause your pelvis (hips) to rotate which will generate more power.
Power in any strike comes primarily from creating rotational force from the ground. Just remember this sequence for maximal rotational power: Knee drops inward > Pelvis rotates > Lower spine rotates > Upper spine and shoulders rotate > your strike travels out from the shoulders down your arm.
Imagine how a whip starts at the handle and then fluidly flows out to the tip where maximum speed is released.
Uppercut Tip 3) Pop the Pelvis for Power
Crouch a little bit from your knees and trunk and then drive up a little from the punching-side leg.
Uppercut Tip 4) Drive the Uppercut Straight Up
Your forearm should be vertical on the uppercut. This helps it get between your opponent’s guard. It also delivers more power.
Drive your uppercut straight up to the ceiling and don’t whip it back at your face.
Uppercut Tip 5) Keep Your Guard Up
As always your non-punching hand should be up in front of your face and projected out away so it can absorb a strike if one happens to be coming towards your money-maker.
Until next time,
