2 BIG Mistakes Punchers Make

Mistake #1 Poor Guard

Too many fighters come in swinging punches wildly and get smashed right in the nose and teeth. If you are willing to put in the practice you can fix this critical mistake.

Unfortunately martial artists are told to put their non-striking hand by their ear for defense… but that leaves your centerline open. Any straight in punch will catch your right on your nose and teeth.

Close the centerline – put your non-striking hand directly in front of your nose and teeth to catch any incoming punches
Project it out at a 45 degree angle in front of you – if it is close to your face a punch will go through it and your own hand will pop you in the nose and teeth
Have it high enough – a punch will walk through your fingers but your palm heel will stop a punch

Mistake #2 No Movement

Question… where is your opponent aiming his punches? Your face.

So why not move your face somewhere else? Better yet, just move your entire body somewhere else, especially away from your opponent’s rear power hand.

Step forward at a 45 degree angle
Most people stand with their left foot forward so you want to move to your forward-right away from their rear hand
This is SOOO much easier if you fight with a right foot forward stance (southpaw lead)
Every time you punch (with any punch) move forward-right at a 45 degree angle to get to your opponent’s side to where they are most vulnerable and have the least offense
Stepping forward-right at a 45 degree angle during a jab w/ rear guard hand protecting the centerline
Stepping forward-right at a 45 degree angle during a jab w/ rear guard hand protecting the centerline

Simply practicing 5 – 50 punches every day focusing on these 2 areas will up your game so much. You see other people don’t work on guard or footwork… so if you do will become hard to deal with as you are that guy who is never standing still and always has a shield up.

As always go get your reps and become a warrior!
