Woman with Knife Defeats Armed Robbers

Woman with Knife Defeats Armed Robbers

It isn’t often in our society today that we get to see people heroically stand up to the bad guys but this gal wasn’t having it.

In a nutshell 2 armed robbers came into a jewelry store to rob it. One had a gun the other had a knife. Both were wearing motorcycle helmets and jackets.

Let’s go over the big take away lessons.

Awareness

At the start of this incident there is an armed robbery going on in the front of the jewelry store. But the guy in the back room for some reason doesn’t hear it going on.

I thought he might have had headphones in or he might even be hearing impaired.

Now I’m not suggesting that you should go around in your life waiting for something bad to happen but ask yourself how can you set up your life so that it isn’t easy for something bad to sneak up on you?

At restaurants and other venues can you sit facing the door with your back against a wall?

Have Your Weapon On You And Ready

The jeweler had a handgun but he had it tucked into a desk drawer. He found out that he couldn’t access it quickly enough from there.

Look you are always going to be working against the clock in an attack because the attacker makes the first move… otherwise they wouldn’t be an attacker…

That means that if your concealed handgun can’t be accessed immediately then you probably won’t be able to get it in time.

The extra seconds that it takes to open a drawer matter. And in this case it kept him from getting the gun before the bad guy got to him.

He is quite fortunate that the robber didn’t stab him with the knife but instead wrestled for control of the gun instead.

If the robber had just stabbed him he could have gotten the gun easily as well.

Obviously there are instances where you should not carry your firearm on you… your coed league soccer game, during your martial arts class, etc. Use your best judgement.

If You Have a Gun You MUST Train With It

People get a false sense of security carrying a concealed handgun.

They think they are ready. But they don’t know what they don’t know.

I’m hoping that by watching this video and reading this blog you will now know what you didn’t know.

And that is if you don’t train you will not perform…

Under stress we revert to training and if you don’t have sufficient reps of training in quick drawing your firearm and using it safely and effectively then you will revert to your training… which is none. That means you will wind up fumbling around ineffectively like the jeweler in this video did.

Even worse as the brave woman was using the knife to defend everyone the jeweler was fumbling around trying to get the firearm ready. I’m not sure if he didn’t understand how to work the safety or if there wasn’t a round in the chamber and he didn’t know how to do that… BUT…

He also pointed the muzzle at his own hand several times.

And he kept his finger on the trigger the entire time. At one point he even fired off a negligent discharge… luckily while pointed at the floor.

Can you imagine if he shot himself or a coworker due to his negligence?

And yes… it is NOT called “accidental” it is called “negligent” because doing stupid things is not an accident!

What to Train

Safety

Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy
Finger off of the trigger until you are on target and ready to shoot
Treat every firearm as if it is loaded even if you know it is not loaded
Always be aware of what is behind, around, and in front of your target

Use & Handling

This includes how to manipulate your firearm. Changing the magazine, locking the slide back, cleaning, etc.

How to move with it, how to grip it, how to aim, etc.

And you want to train this in small daily doses of just a few reps. Those reps add up until after a year you are pretty darn quick!

Of course you want to go to the range and practice your aim, control, and just get used to the small explosion happening in your hands.

Trying to Get Behind a Locked Door

I love that this woman tried to get behind a door and lock it. That is a very smart tactical move “IF” you can get there in time.

Unfortunately she had to remove the key from the front of the door and by the time she did that and got behind the door she couldn’t close it in time and she was overpowered by the robber who was able to push the door open.

You can look at your environment and ask yourself if you had to escape what are the bottlenecks that would prevent you from getting away in time and then remove them.

People are Tough and People are Weak

Yes I know a contradiction right? Let me explain.

The woman stabs the robber with a rather long knife multiple times in the chest, stomach, sides, and back. He ends up going to the hospital and is in critical condition.

Yet in the moment he was still able to fight and then flee. It was only once his adrenaline and endorphins wore off that he lost the ability to fight or flee.

From what I have seen in many instances people that are stabbed or shot can often continue fighting for at least a minute and perhaps 2 minutes… in some instances even longer.

So yeah… people can be really tough. But that goes for YOU as well!

People are weak

People are weak in 2 ways.

1) They are structurally weak in certain areas… namely the eyes and windpipe but also the testicles. I’ve written on that tons so I won’t belabor the point.

2) They are weak in the mind. The robber probably didn’t realize at first that he was being stabbed so he kept fighting for control of the gun from the jeweler.

But once he realized he was being stabbed he went into protection mode where he was supremely focused on avoiding further injury and then trying to escape.

Even the robber with the gun who had every advantage saw the potential injury from the woman with the knife and turned tail and ran.

So take advantage of people’s weak minds by being aggressive.

Now sure I would say it was tactically not the smartest move to charge a robber with a gun while she only had a knife… but you know what? It worked!

Conclusion

There were some really good take aways from this real-life self-defense example.

Have your concealed firearm on you and ready whenever possible.

Be willing to fight back and be aggressive about it to put the criminals on the defense.

And of course train train and train on a regular basis.

Until next time,
