Rapid Punches on Front Gun Disarm
One of the most common things I see when people practice a gun disarm from the front is to grab the gun with one hand, push it off to the side, and then with the other hand repeatedly punch the attacker in the face.
Ok, looks great, very aggressive… total win… right?
Wrong!
Allow me to elaborate
You are Likely to Shoot Yourself
When you push the gun to the side, then bring your free arm up to deliver those rapid punches your punching arm will cross the line of the muzzle.
In other words you will be pointing the gun at yourself.
If the bad guy’s finger is on the trigger (it probably is) then the sudden movement will cause them to squeeze the trigger via a startle response.
That bullet will go right into your arm.
That is only one reason you don’t want to hit when doing a front gun disarm.

That bullet will go right into your arm.
You Can’t Hold Onto the Gun with One Hand
I don’t care how strong you are you can’t hold onto the gun with one hand.
The attacker’s natural reaction will be to pull the gun back to try and keep it. If they have a 1-handed grip that means they have their fingers wrapped around, just like they are pulling on a dumbbell. You on the other hand have a less secure grip that is parallel to the line of force that they will be pulling against. So the gun will slip right out of your hand.

If they have a 2-handed grip then your chances of holding on to it are even worse.
If you are doing a front gun disarm you need to get that gun ASAP. Don’t hit just get the gun.
Don’t Break Your Knuckles
It is bad enough that you found yourself with a gun in your face. Now you have determined to do the front gun disarm.
You fire off a rapid fury of punches into the attacker’s face. Except the attacker tucks their chin and you smash their forehead repeatedly and break you hand.
Congratulations! You now have a boxer’s fracture.
How is the rest of the fight going to work out when you are down one hand?
Ok sure, you could use palm strikes instead so that you won’t break your knuckles.
But the other 2 reasons already listed should more than convince you not to hit when doing a front gun disarm.
Don’t Hit – Just Do the Gun Disarm
So what is the option that will allow you to be more successful?
It is to skip the hitting and go straight to the disarm.
As you push the gun off of you push it right into your other hand. Twist it till the muzzle points at the attacker and then rip it away.

If they do try to pull it back to keep possession of it your rear hand will have a solid grip on it that won’t give.
Then when you twist it fully it will completely break their grip so you can easily rip it away.
Summary
Skip the rapid punching. I know it looks sexy, hard-core, violent… hey all of those things are great. But in this case we want to be smarter. We want to eliminate as many possible failure points as possible to set us up for the win.
Until next time,
Brian
